2022 World’s Strongest Man - Day 3

2022 World’s Strongest Man - Day 3

The results of day 3 of the qualifiers are in! Let’s get right down to what happened. The events of the day were the stone-off and the wrecking ball hold. First up was the wrecking ball hold. Each athlete had to hold a 500 pound wrecking ball by a chain and handle. The winner of this event in Group 1 was Kevin Faires with a time of 1:35.18. Fairies was decisively the winner in this event. Interestingly, Tom Stoltman, by and far the leader of bunch leading into day 3, only held on for 0:4.63. Group 2 was led by none other than Mark Felix. Felix would set a world record with a time of 2:20.49. Of course, any event that involves a hold for time is almost guaranteed to be taken by Felix. Group 3 was won by Trey Mitchell who was the only other competitor to break the two minute mark with a time of 2:06.46. Group 4 was won by Maxime Boudreault. He narrowly beat Pavlov Kordiyaka’s by a margin of 6/10 of a second. Boudreault’s time was 1:33.93 and Kordiyaka’s time was 1:31.33. Finally, Group 5 was won by Kelvin De Ruiter with a time of 1:45.65. Luke Stoltman did not attempt the hold. All that was left was the stone-off.

In the stone-off, each athlete would load six stones to platforms that weighed from 330 pounds to 440 pounds. The last stone, weighing 440 pounds was to be done in an AMRAP set (as many reps as possible). I don’t care how strong you are, a 440 pound stone is heavy, especially for AMRAP. This event would be a faceoff between the second and third place competitors in each group. The winner of this event would be a finalist with their first place counterparts. Group 1 was between Kevin Faires and Gabriel Rhéaume. Rhéaume was the winner. Group 2 was between Bobby Thompson and Brian Shaw, with Shaw being victorious. I was really pulling for Bobby Thompson, but it looks like Shaw still has what it takes to compete at the highest level. Group 3 was won by Trey Mitchell as he defeated Adam Bishop. Group 4 was between Maxime Boudreault and Pavlov Kordiyaka. Boudreault was the winner. Group was the last duel of the day between Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted and Jean-Stephen Coraboeuf. Melsted is your final qualifier of the day.

So, after three days of fierce competition in the hot California sun, the stage for the finals is set! Your finalists are Tom Stoltman, Mitchell Hooper, Oleksii Novikov, Martins Licis, Luke Stoltman, Gabriel Rhéaume, Brian Shaw, Trey Mitchell, Maxime Boudreault and Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted. Friday will be a day of rest for the finalists, and the fist event of the finals will begin Saturday at 8:00 a.m. There are some absolute monsters in the finals this year, and I have no doubt that the scoring will be close! In just a few short days, we will crown the 2022 World’s Strongest Man.
